Readings from "The Center Within" by Rev. Gyomay Kubose

In this episode of Words From My Teachers, an Everyday Buddhism podcast, I am reading the following essays from The Center Within by Rev. Gyomay Kubose:

  • Laughter

  • Rhythm in Life

  • Tokusan’s Candle

  • Who Are You?

  • Basho’s Staff

I hope you enjoy these readings and will take my suggestion and cue to do some reflection at the end of each essay. As my teacher, Rev. Koyo Kubose taught, "Don't just read. Ask yourself how you can use what you heard? How can you add it to your spiritual toolbox?"

A note about some of the references and language used in these essays. They were compiled from talks given by Rev. Gyomay Kubose in the 1980’s, so some of the language and references used may strike you as sexist or out-of-touch. Don’t let this take away from the central theme of the essays. I have not changed the language in my reading but read it as published in 1986.
