Episode 40 of "Words from My Teachers"

Readings from the book, "Bright Dawn: Discovering Your Everyday Spirituality" by Rev. Koyo Kubose

In this episode we will continue reading from the book, Bright Dawn: Discovering Your Everyday Spirituality by Rev. Koyo Kubose, which was published in 2004.

I am offering this episode free because it is a BIG essay! It is BIG because it is about taking a wide view and feeling our connection to the Absolute, no matter what problems, suffering, or self-centered angst we’re experiencing. The vastness of the sky reminds us that our individual life is one with the Absolute—Absolute emptiness.

In these troubled and anxious times, listening to a teaching like this offers a way out of cynicism, worry, anger and confusion. My late teacher, Rev. Koyo Kubose, taught this in the letter he wrote to his son, Tate, which he shares in this essay, Sky.

As he relates in dealing with the loss of a loved one and our own mortality:

How can one live midst of such existential anxiety yet stand above it? What is required is a wide view of life and death. Such a wide view goes beyond an intellectual perspective; it is a spiritual experience.

I hope you will subscribe to hear more from Rev. Koyo. As you can see, he has a delightful way of presenting the Dharma through stories and reflections from his life. I am blessed to have him as a teacher and I can hear his chuckles and see his expressions as I read. I hope it comes through.

I hope you enjoy these Monday readings and also hope you’ll subscribe to ensure you continue listening to the rest of this next book, Bright Dawn.
