Episode 49 of "Words from My Teachers"

Readings from the book, "Bright Dawn: Discovering Your Everyday Spirituality" by Rev. Koyo Kubose
2

In this episode we will continue reading from the book, Bright Dawn: Discovering Your Everyday Spirituality by Rev. Koyo Kubose, which was published in 2004.

After a month’s delay, I will be reading part 2 of a two-part episode of the the essay “Bridge to Inspiration Point.”

I am offering this a free episode because Rev. Koyo shares many unique and powerful Dharma “glimpses” … and to make up for my delay caused by me slipping on the ice on December 13th and breaking my arm. The healing journey is going well and it’s time to start podcasting and posting again!

Take a journey through Rev. Koyo’s reflections as he runs around Lake Michigan, discovering the spiritual lessons he sees in and around him. One is:

When standing at Inspiration Point, Rev. Koyo describes what he calls “shouting words” as a sort of spiritual practice. He writes:

When standing at Inspiration Point, sometimes I shout a phrase out over the water. I’ve come to call such phrases “Shouting Words.” “Shouting Words express what I’m feeling at the time….
Shouting has become a spiritual practice for me…. Some shouting words can deepen their impact over time and become “Turning Words.” “Turning Words” are words that can turn one’s life around. They are like mantras that summarize and empower one’s personal philosophy of life….
A solitary shout to the open sky gives me a feeling of nakedly exposing my inner self to the whole universe. Then I feel the universe reassuring and encouraging me. “Okay, I’m with you. Now, let’s go do something.”

~Rev. Koyo Kubose

I use the practice of “turning words” already. It reminds me of people picking one, two, or three words as their watch words for the new year.

But, maybe I’ll take up “shouting words” this year, too.

Will you join me?

I hope you will subscribe to hear more from Rev. Koyo. As you can see, he has a delightful way of presenting the Dharma through stories and reflections from his life. I am blessed to have had him as a teacher and I can hear his chuckles and see his expressions as I read. I hope it comes through.

I hope you enjoy these Monday readings and also hope you’ll subscribe to ensure you continue listening to the rest of the book, Bright Dawn.
